60 Must-Read Chronic Pain Books For Those Living In Pain

60 Must-Read Chronic Pain Books For Those Living In Pain Home / Inside Pain Blog / 60 Must-Read Chronic Pain Books For Those Living In Pain View Larger Image 60 Must-Read Chronic Pain Books For Those Living In Pain Although chronic pain is common, affecting about 100 million people in the U.S, the experience can be incredibly isolating. Patients may not know other people who are living with the same issues and daily life troubles. Reading about the experiences of another person in a memoir or fictional chronic pain books is like visiting with a friend who understands you. The best chronic pain books can possibly even provide insight into the concerns you’re dealing with. We’ve gathered a number of chronic pain books and memoirs, as well as fictional books that deal with the chronic lifestyle. These characters may not live with chronic pain , but they understand what effects chronic illnesses can have on a life. 10 chronic pain memoirs
One of the most challenging things for people with a chronic illness of any kind is the sense of isolation. The feeling that there is no one else who is having the same experience. One way that this can be counteracted is through media. Books, movies, and television that depict characters or tell the true story of people faced with the same challenges can help.
If you’re looking to lose yourself in a riveting tale about how a real-life person found purpose and triumphed over a similar condition to the one you’re living with, you’re in the right place. Here are a few of our favorite memoirs about chronic pain . 1. In The Blink Of An Eye by Mary Jane Gonzales
This memoir penned by Houston, Texas resident Mary Jane Gonzales catalogues her experiences living with chronic regional pain syndrome (CRPS), also known as reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome (RSDS).
The condition took her by surprise, rendering the previously fully functional woman completely dependent. RSDS is a disorder that affects the sympathetic nervous system. Primary symptoms include severe chronic pain that may feel like a burning sensation in the arm, finger, or palm of the hand.
The disorder came on suddenly, and making matters worse, neither Gonzales nor her doctors understood the reason why her body was reacting in this painful way.
In The Blink Of An Eye catalogues Gonzales’ journey as she learns to cope with the debilitating disease and the changes it brought. 2. The Body Broken: A Memoir by Lynne Greenberg
This book catalogues author Lynne Greenberg’s journey after she survived a near-deadly car crash at the age of 19. Greenberg’s broken neck healed, leading doctors to claim her a medical miracle. Thinking she had fully healed, Greenberg went on over the next 22 years to build the seemingly perfect life with a satisfying marriage, happy children, lovely home, and dream job as a poetry professor.
Then one morning, horrific pain erupted in Greenberg’s neck , shattering without warning the peaceful life she’d built. This memoir follows Greenberg’s physical and spiritual journey of living with chronic pain.
It catalogues her efforts to navigate a health care system that she says is not well equipped to help chronic pain patients. It also reveals what it’s like to lose a full, satisfying life to the clutches of disease.
Descending into the horrors of drugs and depression, readers follow Greenberg as she faces her demons head on to find a pathway toward healing.
Greenberg shares her soul searching, how she learns to rely on the kindness and strength of her family, and how the beauty of poetry helps her reclaim some sense of a normal life. The memoir tells it all, from shifts in Greenberg’s family and marriage dynamics to work and friendships. It also helps other chronic pain patients know they are not alone in the complex ways they must navigate the world. 3. No, It Is Not In My Head: The Journey Of A Chronic Pain Survivor From Wheelchair To Marathon by Nicole Hemmenway
In this inspiring tale, Nicole Hemmenway traces her journey from near incapacitation from CRPS to a marathon runner. Hemmenway was just a high school senior when she received the diagnosis of CRPS. This is a condition that develops typically after an injury but is related to damage from the central and peripheral nervous system.
Hemmenway pulled two tendons in her right hand after a freak accident, and the injury kicked off an arduous journey over the next nine years to find treatment despite doctors’ messages of doom and gloom. Healthcare providers told Hemmenway the condition was incurable, but the fiery woman refused to believe that she would feel this way for the rest of her life.
CRPS left her with little use of her right arm and no use of her hand. Meanwhile, the pain was so bad that Hemmenway resorted to narcotics just to navigate through the day. Her severe pain often left her bed-ridden or in a wheelchair.
This story traces Hemmenway’s journey as she bucks the medical establishment’s dire predictions and finds treatments that work for her unique body and lifestyle. 4. How I Got My Wiggle Back: A Memoir Of Healing by Anthony Field
In this memoir, author Anthony Field, founder of the Australian children’s musical group The Wiggles, reveals the personal struggle behind the worldly success of The Wiggles’ empire, which sells millions of CDs and DVDs to a preschool audience.
All while business was booming, Field struggled from joint pain and chronic headaches , horrible allergies, and clinical depression. The combination of conditions was perplexing, and Fields attributes the ultimate success of his healing journey to two doctors who discovered their root cause.
The book includes background information about how The Wiggles, which started as a live music entertainment group, gained fame, and then how health problems threatened to derail all of Field’s career success.
The book also contains a health program complete with exercise and nutritional advice for other chronic pain patients looking to feel better. 5. Battle For Grace: A Memoir Of Pain, Redemption, And Impossible Love by Cynthia Toussaint
This inspiring tale takes you inside the life of Cynthia Toussaint, a young woman who was an upcoming ballerina before an injury caused undiagnosed pain that lasted for 13 years. For ten of those years, Toussaint could not leave her bed, and for five she could not speak.
Frustratingly, her HMO believed that she was imagining the debilitating pain, which she later realized was CRPS and fibromyalgia. The story catalogues the resilience of her marriage and the man who stuck by her despite 30 years of turmoil, many of those years spent in unimaginable suffering.
Battle For Grace details how Toussaint overcame the pain and transformed it into something beautiful—she not only challenged HMOs and pharmaceutical companies to prioritize patient care over profit, but she has also become a national chronic pain advocate.
Toussaint has appeared in The New York Times and Newsweek , and on The Discovery Channel, among many other publications and media channels. She lobbied for health care reform in California and founded the non-profit organization For Grace to raise awareness about CRPS.
In Battle For Grace , get to know the story behind his remarkable woman and how she turned her greatest tragedy into her life’s purpose. Other chronic pain memoirs
Other highly-recommended chronic pain memoirs include: Chocolate & Vicodin: My Quest for Relief from the Headache that Wouldn’t Go Away by Jennette Fulda All in My Head: An Epic Quest to Cure an Unrelenting, Totally Unreasonable, and Only Slightly Enlightening Headache by Paula Kamen A Brain Wider Than the Sky: A Migraine Diary by Andrew Levy The Two Kinds of Decay by Sarah Manguso Backbone: Living with Chronic Pain without Turning into One by Karen Duffy 16 fiction books about the chronic life
Books with fictional writing about characters with chronic illness can be a tricky thing. Why people get headaches from looking at buildings – CNN Style

Looking at buildings can actually give people headaches. Here’s why Updated 6th July 2018 Looking at buildings can actually give people headaches. Here’s why In partnership with Written by Arnold J Wilkins, The Conversation Arnold J Wilkins is a professor of psychology at the University of Essex. The views expressed in this commentary are solely those of the writer. CNN is showcasing the work of The Conversation , a collaboration between journalists and academics to provide news analysis and commentary. The content is produced solely by The Conversation. It’s three o’clock. You’re at work, struggling to focus during the afternoon lull. You gaze out of your office window, hoping for some relief, but instead you feel a headache coming on. Flat gray concrete lines the streets, while windows form repetitive glassy intervals in stark brick walls. With monotonous straight lines as far as the eye can see, there’s nowhere pleasant to rest your gaze. It may seem a superficial problem, but our research has found that looking at urban landscapes may actually give you a headache. Over tens of thousands of years, the human brain evolved to effectively process scenes from the natural world. But the urban jungle poses a greater challenge for the brain, because of the repetitive patterns it contains. Is this the world’s craziest new skyscraper? Mathematician Jean-Baptiste Joseph Fourier showed that we can think of scenes as being made up of striped patterns, of different sizes, orientations and positions, all added together. These patterns are called Fourier components. Scenes from nature have stripes that tend to cancel each other out, so that when added together no stripes appear in the image, whereas urban environments tend to feature regular, repetitive patterns. Credit: Top: Courtesy Sam Beebe/Flickr. Bottom: Tsaiian/Flickr, CC BY-NC Hard to look at In nature, as a general rule, components with low spatial frequency (large stripes) have a high contrast and components with high frequency (small stripes) have a lower contrast. We can call this simple relationship between spatial frequency and contrast a “rule of nature.” Put simply, scenes from nature have stripes that tend to cancel each other out, so that when added together no stripes appear in the image. Sou Fujimoto, the visionary blending architecture with nature, eyes the future But this is not the case with scenes from the urban environment. Urban scenes break the rule of nature: they tend to feature regular, repetitive patterns, due to the common use of design features such as windows, staircases and railings. Regular patterns of this kind are rarely found in nature. Because the repetitive patterns of urban architecture break the rule of nature, it is more difficult for the human brain to process them efficiently. Credit: MOHD RASFAN/AFP/AFP/Getty Images Because the repetitive patterns of urban architecture break the rule of nature, it is more difficult for the human brain to process them efficiently. And because urban landscapes are not as easy to process, they are less comfortable to look at. Some patterns, such as the stripes on door mats, carpets and escalator stair treads can trigger headaches and even epileptic seizures. Dream home crammed into 309-sqft transformer apartment We came to these conclusions by measuring the efficiency with which the brain processes images of natural and urban scenes. There are two ways of measuring efficiency; the first is to build simple computer models of the way that nerve cells compute what we see. How the 1960s and 1970s inspired radical architecture One model was built by Paul Hibbard (University of Essex) and Louise O’Hare (University of Lincoln), and another at the University of St Andrews by Olivier Penacchio and colleagues. Both models show that when the brain processes images that depart from the rule of nature, the activity of the nerve cells is increased, and becomes less sparsely distributed. In other words, such images take more effort for the brain to process. A picture taken on November 30, 2016 in Paris shows the “Salle Labrouste” of the The Bibliotheque nationale de France after its restoration. / AFP / FRANCOIS GUILLOT (Photo credit should read FRANCOIS GUILLOT/AFP/Getty Images) Credit: FRANCOIS GUILLOT/AFP/AFP/Getty Images For our own research, Olivier and I designed a computer program that measures how well images adhere to the rule of nature. After running the program, we found that departure from the rule of nature predicts how uncomfortable people find it to look at any given image — whether it’s an image of a building or a work of art. We then analyzed images of apartment buildings, and found that over the last 100 years, the design of buildings has been departing further and further from the rule of nature; more and more stripes appear decade by decade, making the buildings less and less comfortable to look at. O₂ joy Another way to measure the efficiency of the brain’s visual processes is to measure the amount of oxygen used by the visual part of the brain, located at the back of the head. When the brain uses oxygen, it changes color. We can track these changes by shining infrared light onto the scalp, and measuring the scattered light which bounces back off the brain and through the skull. Typically, oxygen usage is greater when people look at uncomfortable images, such as urban scenes. Researchers have found that more and more stripes in architecture appear decade by decade, making the buildings less and less comfortable to look at. Credit: TIMOTHY A. CLARY/AFP/AFP/Getty Images We found that the rule of nature not only predicts the levels of discomfort suggested by computer models, it also predicts how much oxygen is used by the brain. That is, our brains use more oxygen when we look at scenes which depart from the rule. Since headaches tend to be associated with excess oxygen usage, this may explain why some designs give us headaches. Hospital designs that are changing the way you’re cared for People who get migraines are particularly susceptible to the discomfort from repetitive patterns; these patterns increase the use of oxygen (which in those who sufferer migraines is already abnormally high.) The patterns can give rise to a headache, possibly as a result. Indeed, some individuals with migraine cannot function in certain modern offices, because the patterns bring on a headache every time they enter the building. 1/10 – Vertical Horizons City dwellers are perhaps more acquainted with the architecture of their phones than the skyscrapers that carve out their commutes. However, Hong Kong-based photographer Romain Jacquet-Lagrѐze reckons eyes should be diverted upward. Documenting the colossal sky-rises that crowd the city, Jacquet-Lagrѐze captures these giants from the ground up in his book Vertical Horizons , unveiling extraordinary sights often missed when heads are kept down. By Monique Todd, for CNN Credit: Courtesy of Romain Jacquet-Lagrèze Perhaps it’s time for the rule of nature to be incorporated into the software that is used to design buildings and offices. Or interior designers can vary the wall designs, blinds and carpets they install, to avoid adding more stripes indoors. Of course, some repetitive patterns are an unavoidable result of modular construction. But many stripes are there quite unnecessarily, simply as design features — to catch the eye. Unfortunately, they may end up hitting the head, too. Copyright 2018 The Conversation . Some rights reserved. Best Lifestyle & Leisure

Acute medication is used to abort an attack, while prophylactic m Posted on by admin
Acute medication is used to abort an attack, while prophylactic medications reduce attack frequency and thus modify migraine disease or susceptibility
of the nervous system to migraine. Many migraine medications approved, as either an acute or prophylactic http://www.selleckchem.com/products/XL184.html treatment, have demonstrated ability to function as both acute and prophylactic treatments.1-3 There has been little research on the use of acute migraine medications in populations with frequent episodic or chronic migraine. Yet these patient populations arguably have the greatest need for effective relief from episodes of migraine. While many acute medications have clinical efficacy as being effective at relieving headaches in patients with high-frequency episodic and chronic migraine, it is widely
accepted that too frequent use of acute medications can result in medication overuse headache (MOH).[4] Efforts to control use of acute medication in high-need populations either by providers or pharmacy benefit plans are complicated by the fact that there are many acute migraine medications available over-the-counter (OTC). Consequently, Deforolimus datasheet many patients utilize a combination of prescription and OTC medications in an effort to adequately treat their pattern of frequent migraine. This makes the control of acute medication a challenging clinical dilemma. In addition, little is known about the risks and benefits of using these products in combination with one another. Population-based epidemiological studies suggest that opioids, caffeine, and butalbital combination products carry the highest risk of transforming episodic to
chronic migraine.[5] Triptans and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) carry less risk.[5] In fact, one epidemiological study found that NSAIDs appear to have a protective effect when used with a frequency of less than 10 days per month.[6] Cytidine deaminase Yet, this study did not consider the use of multiple classes of acute pharmacological treatments in a single subject as a risk factor for migraine chronification. The possibility exists that different classes of acute medication, when used together, may interact and produce different levels of risk or benefit. In phase 3, regulatory trials of a combination of sumatriptan 85 mg and naproxen sodium 500 mg (SumaRT/Nap) with subjects who experienced 2-6 migraine attacks per month, SumaRT/Nap was superior in 2-hour efficacy to sumatriptan or naproxen sodium alone.[7] In addition, there was less recurrence of migraine than with either component of this product used alone. In a 12-month safety study, SumaRT/Nap was well tolerated in subjects who treated an average of 5 migraine attacks with an average of 6 days between attacks.[8] Migraine attack frequency increased slightly over baseline for both 6 and 12 months completers (4.3 vs 5.0 vs 4.
