Seniors for America, 179 Oak Street #L, San Francisco CA 94102.

Endorsements will be announced at Noon, Wednesday, September 15, 2004.

1) Is this your first campaign? If so, what or who inspired you to run for office?

This is my first campaign, although I served as Executive Director of the New Hampshire Democratic Party in the 1970s, worked for a New Hampshire senate campaign, worked in the Senate office of a former U.S. Senator, and served as the chair of one of the campaigns of former New Hampshire Governor Jeanne Shaheen. I also recently served as chairman of the board of trustees for the University System of New Hampshire.

In the last 18 months, New Hampshire’s state government has been engulfed in nearly continuous ethical scandals. At the same time, there has been little to no progress on the things that matter to New Hampshire families – better jobs, better, schools, better health care. I love this state and I care about its future. I decided that I could not sit by the sidelines. That is why I decided to run.

2) What is your Party affiliation?

Democrat

3) What elected offices have you held? Years?

I have not held elected office before.

4) Please list the three most important issues to your campaign.

1) Creating good-paying jobs by strengthening New Hampshire’s economy. Nothing is more important to New Hampshire’s families than building our economy and making our workers have high-quality jobs. Key to building our state’s economy is strengthening our state’s commitment to public education and its students. A skilled workforce is the key to our ability to attract good companies and good jobs. I believe we need to make sure every child in our state has an equal opportunity for a quality education. We must also do more to make higher education – whether it is college or technical training – affordable and accessible to all of our citizens.

2) Working for more affordable health care. We must start by repealing SB 110, but we must also do more to make sure every child in New Hampshire has access to health insurance by investing in our state’s Healthy Kids Children’s Health Insurance Program.

3) Turning around state government and restoring integrity. We’ve seen too much Enron-style ethics in the past two years, and the needs of the people of New Hampshire have been put on the back burner. When I am Governor, I will send a very clear message to people who seek public office for their own gain: “You need not apply.” But by integrity, I also mean how people are treated. I don’t believe you motivate people by intimidation. Our state employees work hard and deserve to be treated with respect.

5) What do you feel sets you apart from your opponent(s)?

My integrity and my leadership experience. For the past 18 months, New Hampshire has been engulfed in a series of ethical scandals and the interests of the people of New Hampshire have not been put first.

I am someone who knows how to look out for the bottom line and still look out for people. I also know how to bring people together, Democrats, Independents and Republicans, to find solutions.

When I took over at Knoll Furniture, it was losing $1 million a week. Within a year, we had turned it around and made it profitable again, saving the jobs of workers across the company. During my tenure at Knoll, we created jobs and invested in our workers: giving workers annual bonuses for the first time, creating a scholarship fund for the children of Knoll workers, giving workers stock in the company and creating retirement accounts for workers who didn’t have any.

As the chairman of the University System of New Hampshire, I successfully fought Gov. Craig Benson’s state budget cuts that would have raised tuition even higher. And as a member of the board of a community hospital, I fought successfully to keep it when its corporate owners wanted to shut it down.

6) Please list your other endorsements.

Howard Dean

Named one of Democracy for America’s “Dean Dozens”

Former New Hampshire Governor Jeanne Shaheen

New Hampshire State Troopers Association

Keene Police Officers’ Association

The Building Trades Council

The American Federation of Teachers

Teamsters

7) Please list your other grassroots support.

I am proud of the broad support I have received from Democrats, Independents and Republicans. For example, a prominent group of New Hampshire Republicans recently endorsed me, as did 74 Democratic House members, state senators and House candidates.

My campaign has received contributions from more than 1,000 contributors and even more have volunteered their time and energy.

8) Please state your previous occupation and professional affiliations.

Owner of the Lynch Group, a business consulting organization.

Former chairman of board of trustees of the University System of New Hampshire.

Former President and CEO of Knoll, Inc.

Spent several years working with Westinghouse to help in its effort to turn around television stations.

Former associate dean at Harvard Business School.

9) Please list your hobbies and other interests.

My passion is coaching, especially the teams of my three children. I have coached softball, baseball, soccer and hockey.

I also make time every Sunday morning to play in my own hockey game.

10) Seniors for America member referral.
