1) Is this your first campaign? If so, what or who inspired you to run for office?

This is my first campaign for public office. The person who inspired me the most was Howard Dean. When Governor Dean said, "You have the power!" it got me thinking about what I could do to help my community. That led me to consider the county auditor position. When I asked others about a possible candidacy I received an overwhelmingly positive response.

 

2) What is your Party affiliation? 

Democratic

 

3) What elected offices have you held? Years? 

None

 

4) Please list the three most important issues to your campaign.

a) Filing reports on-time to the state. My opponent has filed late reports for three years in a row and forfeited $200,000. As a result, property taxes (paid primarity by seniors in this county) will be increasing.

b) Reviewing the technology used by the county offices, including the network, so data can be shared more effectively. Clayton County is currently last in the state in the issuing of property tax statements, and uses a program that is outdated and error prone.

c) Dealing with the voting machine mess. Our current machines are only two years old, but will be obsolete by federal law (HAVA) after this election. This expensive mistake by the auditor's office has already cost hundreds of thousands to county taxpayers, and will cause hundreds of thousands more to replace.

 

5) What do you feel sets you apart from your opponent(s)?

My opponent is a 24 year incumbent in the county auditor position. I will bring fresh ideas and a team based management approach to the auditor's office. Additionally, I will have town hall meetings throughout the county to answer questions and receive feedback from the public.

I am currently a quality engineer with the Square D Company and I am also a farmer. My professional affiliations include the American Society for Quality, Practical Farmers of Iowa, National Farmers Organization, Farm Bureau, and the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy.

 

9) Please list your hobbies and other interests.

I am a lay speaker in the United Methodist Church. I also am a 4-H leader and volunteer basketball coach. My family and I raise Mulefoot Hogs which are a rare heritage breed of swine.
