1)
Is this your first campaign? If so, what or who inspired you to
run for office?
This is my
first campaign. I’ve worked behind the scenes for years.
But I truly believe this is the most important election in decades
and I wanted to play a more active role. This office in
particular offers the chance to impact virtually every person
in our state by making certain that their safety – and their pocketbooks
– are protected.
2)
What is your Party affiliation?
Democrat
3)
What elected offices have you held? Years?
None
4)
Please list the three most important issues to your campaign.
1] Environment:
We must make wise use of our natural resources. Allowing 6
new power plants to be built in Arizona with all their power going to California means Arizona water will be used and Arizona air will be polluted
all to the benefit of out-of-state interests. It will also
put additional pressure on the supply of natural gas in our state,
meaning more pipelines. That just doesn’t make sense.
Nor does it make sense that in a state that boasts 360 days a year
of sunshine that our renewable energy portfolio stands at 1.1%.
That must be increased immediately, with resources put into making
renewables cost-effective so we can minimize our dependence on fossil
fuels. We also need to address demand-side management of resources
through statewide education campaigns.
2] Infrastructure: Our infrastructure
is at risk. At a time when we have to protect infrastructure
from possible terrorist attacks, we can’t even protect ourselves
from the basics: aging pipelines that have not been inspected adequately,
transmission hubs whose layout means a fire in one area impacts
others, and a nuclear power plant that has to be shut down because
a bird’s droppings fell in the wrong place! We must conduct
a full audit of every aspect to try to determine potential problems
and address them, rather than merely respond crises.
3] Outreach/Education: The Commission must
be more proactive in handling its myriad responsibilities.
I’d like to work year round to involve constituents in the process
not only when there’s a crisis or a major rate case, but also to
seek input and make people more aware of the critical role the ACC
has on their daily lives.
5) What do you feel sets you apart
from your opponent(s)?
My background
as a journalist in Arizona gives me the skill to ask the probing
questions necessary to make certain ALL the facts are on the table.
That training also has taught me to listen with an unbiased ear,
then find the balance necessary to make wise decisions on behalf
of Arizonans.
In addition,
I’m the only candidate who doesn’t live in Maricopa County. It’s hard to make fully
informed decisions when only one experiential point of view is
represented. The pipeline break last year impacted Tucson VERY differently than Phoenix. The possibility
of UniSource being bought by an outside investment group is far
more critical to those who live in Southern and Northern Arizona where UniSource
serves hundreds of thousands of people. Transmission lines
proposed from Tucson to Nogales to Mexico and/or California will impede our views daily – and go through
one of the most beautiful and important sky islands in Southern Arizona. I want to bring ‘the rest of Arizona’
to the table, too!
6) Please list your other endorsements.
Dean for
America [part of the original Dean
Dozen!], AZ Women’s Political Caucus, AFSCME Tucson, League of Conservation Voters.
7)
Please list your other grassroots support.
I’ve served
on well over two dozen boards of directors during the last two
decades ranging from fine arts [Ballet Tucson, Tucson Symphony]
to social service [La Frontera Mental Health, Tu Nidito Child
and Family Services], to business [member of the Rotary Club of
Tucson, past member of several Sister City commissions] and advocacy
[Arizona Center for Law in the Public Interest, Community Shares
of Southern Arizona.] This service has afforded me the chance
to work in numerous ‘circles’ throughout Arizona and build my
own grassroots network not only for support, but also for input
on critical issues.
Among
the other boards on which I’ve served or agencies with which I’ve
volunteered are S. AZ AIDS Foundation; Governor’s Task Force on
School Age Child Care; Tucson Rape Crisis Center; Brewster Center
for Victims of Family Violence; Crime Prevention League; American
Cancer Society; Executive Women’s Council; Ronald McDonald House,
Global Justice, Casa Maria Soup Kitchen, KUAT Community Advisory
Board, and the Arizona Women’s Partnership.
